Many major events in Icelandic history took place in the south, such as the foundation of the Alþingi (parliament) in 930 AD and the establishment of the modern Icelandic republic in 1944. Two of Iceland‘s most active volcanic zones lie across the south, where several well-known volcanoes are situated, such as Mt. Hekla, Mt. Katla and Mt. Eyjafjallajökull.
The map introduces the history and heritage of South Iceland from the settlement in the 9th century up to the 20th century.
